The Earth Masters Program
The Earth Masters Program is a grassroots, hands-on learning system created and supported by a co-operative web of not-for-profit, social enterprise, student and teaching partners, designed to enable anyone, at any level, to build and live with more appropriately sustainable practices.
We have planned weekend workshops, consecutive 6-day intensives, as well as 2-month, 6-month, 1-year or 2-year program models, including think tanks and field schools. All 6-day classes can also be taught in evenings and in weekend slots over a longer period of time. 2007 will be all about Introductory classes, in weekend and series format. 2008 will lay the foundation for the Farm Fairy Village demonstration site. 2009 will provide the beginings of "trades" workshop strings that can be used to weave together and create your own (non-accredited) home-brand of education for specific backyard and project needs.
INTRODUCTION
The Earth Masters (EM) Program is a new concept in designer education and knowledge sharing, conceived and communicated by the Community Assets Project. Student-operated and self-designed, administratively non-hierarchical and truly grassroots, the EM Community acts as a framework to bring together people whose goal is learning to live sustainably. Like a tree, it has many branches and many roots, many leaves and seeds, all of which must work together simultaneously and spontaneously in order to grow. We believe hierarchies are unequal; therefore we strive to work together with respect and kindness for one another in all circumstances. Just as a tree has no head, the Earth Masters Program is truly non-hierarchical. The EM Program is a scheduling system for sharing sustainability knowledge and for fostering creative, hands-on learning environments.
CLASSES
Classes will be taught throughout the south end of Vancouver Island, hosted through three main day-program institutions and four auxiliary evening and weekend facilities, as well as various project sites, an array of farms, community hall and school buildings possible, as our classroom needs continue to expand. (Our Vancouver Island locations include: Cedar, Gabriola, Nanaimo, Comox, Duncan, Cobble Hill & Shawnigan Lake)
All scheduling workshops and course components are coordinated by the students and volunteers on a cooperative basis with experts and specialists in sustainability-related fields, who work as independent freelance instructors for the benefit of the students of the EM learning community.
A current list of hosting community partners, would include: Gabriola Commons, Green Central Station, O.U.R Eco Village, Tamagawa Institute, Little Slocan Lodge, Community Assets Project, Community Involvement Project, as well as supporting community churches, schools and farms, throughout Vancouver Island and the Interior of British Columbia.
